Despite Natural Death Finding, Woman Arrested in Dr. Kiggundu Case Awaits DPP Decision

Kampala, Uganda – The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is expected to announce its decision soon regarding Eva Mbabazi, who was arrested earlier this week in connection with the death of Dr. Spire Kiggundu, the founder of Henrob Hospital. Mbabazi was taken into custody on Monday following a review of CCTV footage.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango confirmed that Mbabazi is currently detained at Kajjansi Police Division. “She has been cooperative and provided information, which we have submitted to the State Attorney for legal advice,” SSP Onyango stated.

Dr. Kiggundu was found dead inside Dream Guest House in Kajjansi Town Council. He had reportedly entered the premises through a back entrance. His family raised concerns after he failed to return home and could not be reached on his phone. The family collaborated with the police to retrace his last movements using CCTV cameras installed on major roads in Kampala, leading to the discovery of his body.

Following the discovery, Dr. Kiggundu’s body was transferred to Mulago Hospital Mortuary, where a postmortem examination was conducted. The report indicated that Dr. Kiggundu died of heart-related complications due to low blood supply. “We ask the public to disregard claims that he was killed,” said Dr. Luyimbazi, a member of the deceased’s family, who witnessed the postmortem.6 “The postmortem, which we witnessed, showed he died from a heart condition due to low blood supply.” Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, a renowned cartoonist and Dr. Kiggundu’s brother, also corroborated this on his X (formerly Twitter) account, affirming the natural cause of death.

Despite the postmortem findings, CCTV footage from Dream Guest House showed a woman, now identified as Eva Mbabazi, entering the premises shortly after Dr. Kiggundu’s arrival. She left approximately an hour later through the same back entrance. This footage prompted her arrest as the last person seen with the deceased. “We could not conclude investigations without arresting Mbabazi since she was the last person seen with him,” Onyango explained

The police are now awaiting guidance from the State Attorney, under the DPP’s office, on whether any charges will be filed against Mbabazi.
