Authorities in the West Nile region have cautioned the people of Yumbe District against engaging in acts of religious extremism.

The warning came during a meeting held at Takwa Mosque on Friday, chaired by the Regional Police Commander, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Joseph Mwesige. The meeting followed recent violent incidents involving youth who reportedly protested the sale of pork in the area. Security officials described the unrest as being linked to rising religious extremism within the community.

SSP Mwesige reminded residents that “Islam stands for unity, peace, and development,” stressing that the religion should never be associated with “violence or destruction.” He urged the community to differentiate between the genuine principles of Islam and criminal acts carried out under its guise.

The commander further appealed to local leaders and residents to embrace dialogue and mutual understanding rather than encouraging conflict or inciting young people. He assured that the police remain open to cooperation with the community in order to promote peace and stability across the region.

According to some attendees of the district security meeting, several key resolutions were passed. These included maintaining continuous police patrols within Yumbe Town and nearby areas, compiling a detailed report on the situation, and seeking assistance for those affected by the recent clashes.

It was also agreed that “suspects arrested should be vetted, the innocent released, and the culprits detained.” Participants suggested that a radio talk show be used to communicate these resolutions through the Interreligious Council and to educate the public on the “proper use of social media.” The meeting observed that misinformation and falsehoods were being spread through platforms like TikTok. In response, the district leadership was urged to provide timely and accurate information to counter speculation.

Collins Asea, the Police Spokesperson for North West Nile, confirmed that the meeting resolved to ensure that all individuals involved in the criminal acts of November 4, 2025, will be held accountable and face the full force of the law.
