The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has intensified efforts to safeguard wetlands across Uganda, with a recent enforcement operation targeting encroachment in Kajjansi Wetland.

According to a press release issued by NEMA on Monday, June 1, 2026, a joint inspection conducted on Sunday, May 31, 2026, led to the stoppage of illegal construction activities within the wetland.

The operation involved NEMA's Environment Protection Force, the Environmental Protection Police Unit, the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF), the Department of Wetlands Management under the Ministry of Water and Environment, and relevant local government authorities.

NEMA confirmed that arrests were made during the operation and that a criminal case file has been opened under SD REF 04/31/05/2026. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

The Authority said it is taking steps to halt further degradation of the wetland and will issue Environment Restoration Orders in accordance with the provisions of the National Environment Act, Cap 181.

NEMA also commended members of the public for remaining vigilant and reporting areas affected by wetland encroachment.

"The Authority remains committed to protecting Uganda's environment and ensuring that people enjoy their right to a clean and healthy environment," the statement said.

NEMA further reminded individuals who have encroached on wetlands across the country to peacefully vacate the affected areas before enforcement operations reach them. The Authority noted that enforcement activities will continue until encroached wetlands are restored and protected.

Wetlands play a critical role in supporting environmental sustainability by providing flood control, water purification, biodiversity conservation, and climate regulation services.

The statement was issued by Naomi N. Karekaho, Head of Corporate Communications at NEMA.
