Power lines need to be protected

Three men have been convicted of vandalizing high voltage power lines in Kakira sugar plantation last year.

The three, Waisswa Hasuman and Kikaka Musa were arrested in Kakira sugar plantation last year while cutting angle bars from a 132KV high voltage line by UETCL staff.

The trio were convicted in the Magistrates court of  Bugembe on two counts of interfering with the Electrical installations section 87(1) and (2) of the Electricity Act and theft section 254 of the Penal Code Act. The three have been sentenced to five years in prison each. They were each given five year jail sentences upon conviction.

Their co-accused Okello Ronald and Mpamba Abdu alias Ndoya were acquitted of the same offences although Mpamba Abdu was further sentenced to two years in prison for attempting to escape during the period he was on remand.

Court handed back to UETCL the eighteen pieces of angle bars tendered in court as exhibits during the proceedings.
