Independence excitement, free lunch pull thousands in Luuka
The excitement about commemorating Uganda’s independence day celebrations from home ground coupled with the promise of free meal attracted thousands of people around Luuka district yesterday.
As early as 6am, hundreds of people had started pouring in at Kiyunga Saza ground, the Headquarters of Luuka district in Busoga sub-region and also the venue for the 54th Independence celebrations.
Luuka was the first venue since the government decided to rotate Uganda’s independence day celebrations.
To most local people, the rotational celebrations were a blessing and could not wait to miss any slight event of the celebrations yet for the 54 years they have been unable to trek to Kololo independence ground where the day was being celebrated.
But the promise of a free meal was to many attendees as welcome note. Butaleja RDC, Richard Gulume Balyainho, a member of the regional organizing committee, had remarked in many of his mobilisation campaigns on many Busoga radio stations that whoever would attend would be served with a meal.
“We know that people are coming from corners of Uganda and some will have to move overnight, we cannot leave such people to go back hunger yet they are celebrating their independence, enough meals have been prepared for all people” he told our reporter.
