Uganda’s security arrest Victoria University VC Dr. Muganga
The Vice Chancellor of Kampala-based Victoria University Dr. Lawrence Muganga has been arrested by Uganda’s security agents, UPDF Spokesperson Brig. Flavia Byekwaso said.
Byekwaso posted on Twitter that Dr. Muganga was arrested in connection with espionage. Social Media posts suggest that Dr. Muganga holds a Canadian passport as well as an ‘irregular’ Ugandan National ID which expires in 2029. It’s alleged that Dr. Muganga has been spying for Rwanda.
Byekwaso’s post came after reports initially suggested that Dr. Muganga had been kidnapped when he was dragged out of his office located at Victoria University on Jinja road, by plain-clothed men with guns. The security men also allegedly beat up his bodyguards during the arrest.
But the UPDF spokesperson later clarified that: “Social media reports that Vice Chancellor Victoria University Dr Lawrence Muganga was kidnapped are false. He was arrested by joint Security Forces in connection with espionage and illegal stay in the country. Investigations into the matter have commenced.”
The arrest of Dr. Muganga could prove to be another low point in the ever worsening trend in relations between Uganda and Rwanda.
