At least 67 individuals who were injured in the tragic accident along the Gulu–Kampala Highway in Kiryandongo District have been discharged from Kiryandongo General Hospital.

The victims were swiftly evacuated from the crash site and taken to the hospital, where they received treatment for their injuries.

Speaking to reporters, Dr. Godfrey Kisembo, the Medical Superintendent of Kiryandongo General Hospital, confirmed that all 67 patients who had been admitted following the accident have now been discharged. “All the 67 survivors who were rushed and admitted to the facility have been discharged after they all responded well to treatment,” he said.

Dr. Kisembo noted that by Thursday evening, every patient admitted after the crash had already been released. He explained that although most survivors had sustained various injuries, their conditions were generally stable, allowing for prompt medical attention and successful recovery. He also commended the hospital staff for their timely and effective response in treating the victims.

Meanwhile, by Thursday evening, reports from both the police and hospital authorities indicated that out of the 46 people who lost their lives in the accident, 40 bodies had been identified and claimed by their relatives.

According to Dr. Kisembo, six bodies remained unclaimed and were still being kept at the hospital mortuary as of Thursday evening. He speculated that the relatives of these victims might be living far away and were possibly unaware that their loved ones had been involved in the crash.

Edward Katumba Wamala, the Minister of Works and Transport, attributed the cause of the accident to reckless driving. He stated that “preliminary investigations show that the accident was caused by speeding and dangerous overtaking.”
