Uganda walks for the hungry
Hundreds of people from government, civil society organizations and schools have today taken part in a walk to create awareness about hunger.
The walk, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and fisheries, was in line with the global mission of eradicating hunger by 2030. The walk started from the FAO offices in Wandegeya to Kololo.
After a period of decline, world hunger is reported to be on the rise again. Over 820 million people a suffering chronic undernourishment, according to the FAO 2018 report on the state of food security and nutrition in the world.
The State Minister for Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries Christopher Kibazanga, who represented the Prime Minister as the Chief Guest, said the walk was intended to dramatize an ugly situation of hunger.
The FAO representative to Uganda Puriya Gujadhir called upon organizations and individuals to promote the local economy and small scale industries, especially the agro-based.
Gujadhir expressed the need to transform the rural economy as 70 percent of the world’s poor live in rural areas and their lives depend on agriculture, fisheries or forestry.
