Five Arrested in Murder of NGO Worker Along Katosi Road, Firearm and Uniforms Recovered

A joint security operation has led to the arrest of five suspects in connection with the murder of Mr. Wayengera Godfrey, a Compassion International Uganda employee who was brutally killed along Katosi Road in Mukono District last month.

Mr. Wayengera was traveling from Mbale to Kampala on June 9, 2025, in the company of Christine Najjabi when their journey was violently interrupted by a group of armed attackers clad in military uniforms. His body was later discovered dumped in Namulira Village, Mukono District, sparking a widespread security probe.

In a statement released by the Uganda Police spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma, authorities confirmed that significant progress has been made, with five individuals arrested and a cache of evidence recovered including a SAR rifle and multiple sets of military and police uniforms.

The Arrested Suspects Are: Tumusiime Ashraf alias Obadiah (40), resident of Kireka, apprehended at Ku Sattu, Kayunga Road, Mukono, Ssenteza Mike (40), from Wakiso, arrested in Busawuli Ward, Wakiso District, Kasolo Fahad (30), resident of Nabweru and Kireka, captured on Kamuli Road, Kireka, Sgt. Mwesige Muhammad alias Jet Lee/Munamakerere (50), a known army deserter from Kagugube, arrested in Wandegeya, Cpl Mugabe Borban Aspa, an active army officer and resident of Kagugube, also apprehended in Wandegeya.

According to preliminary findings, the suspects are part of an organized criminal gang that targets traders and travelers, particularly along the Katosi Road corridor. Investigations suggest the gang has been impersonating security personnel to carry out attacks, a strategy that has enabled them to bypass suspicion and execute coordinated ambushes.

Police emphasized that the recovery of the firearm and uniforms points to a broader pattern of criminality involving armed robbery and murder under the guise of official enforcement.

“We want to assure the public that security agencies are working tirelessly to ensure this matter is brought to its logical conclusion. We shall continue to pursue all leads to bring those responsible to justice,” ACP Kituuma stated

The murder of Mr. Wayengera has sent shockwaves through the NGO and humanitarian sectors, where he was widely respected for his work in community development. Compassion International Uganda has not yet issued a statement but is reportedly working closely with authorities.

This latest case highlights the growing threat posed by rogue elements using military disguises to terrorize civilians. Security agencies have called on the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity.
