18 Arrested Over Daylight Robbery During NRM Primaries in Nsambya

Police in Kabalagala are actively investigating a case of violent robbery and assault that marred the National Resistance Movement (NRM) parliamentary primary elections in Nsambya, Kampala, on July 17. The chaos, which unfolded in broad daylight, was captured in a disturbing video that has since gone viral on social media.

The footage shows a gang of thugs violently mugging and robbing members of the public during the electoral exercise, triggering widespread public outrage and prompting swift action from security forces.

According to a press statement issued by the Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, investigators at Kabalagala Police Station immediately analysed the footage. They identified several suspects involved in the attacks.

“On 17th July 2025, police responded swiftly to the incident, leading to the immediate arrest of eight suspects,” ASP Owoyesigyire revealed.

Further analysis of CCTV footage and intelligence from interrogations led to another intelligence-led operation on July 20, during which 10 more suspects were apprehended.

Those arrested in the second operation include: Were Phillip, Lubwama Sharif, Wasike Patrick, Ngobi Brian, Mugisha Shafiq, Rashid Sebisaba, Ochwo Emmanuel, Kakooza Abdul Rakim, Ominga Brian, Katongole Meddy, also known as Baros

This brings the total number of arrests to 18. All the suspects have been charged with Simple Robbery and are set to be produced in court.

“Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to having participated in the robbery and assault of innocent civilians during the electoral exercise,” the police spokesperson noted.

ASP Owoyesigyire emphasised the police’s continued commitment to restoring public safety and bringing all those involved to justice.

“Further intelligence-led operations are ongoing to apprehend additional suspects still at large. We continue to appeal to the public to share any information that may lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects,” he added.

The violent incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety and integrity of electoral processes in the country, especially during politically charged events.
