Police Foil Shs 50M Robbery in Kyotera, One Suspect Shot Dead, Two Guns Recovered

Security forces in Greater Masaka have successfully foiled a robbery involving Shs 50 million, killing one suspect and recovering two firearms following a high-speed pursuit from Kyotera District to Kizigo Village, officials have confirmed.

According to SP Twaha Kasirye, the Public Relations Officer for Greater Masaka, five armed robbers attacked the manager of Mazima Bugaga Coffee Factory in Chifuta Village, Kyotera District, at around 1:37 PM on July 22, 2025. The attackers made off with cash amounting to Shs 50 million.

Immediately alerted, the Uganda Police Force launched a coordinated pursuit of the suspects, who were fleeing toward Masaka. The operation was led by Masaka District Police Commander (DPC) Joel Tayebwa, under the regional supervision of the Regional Police Commander (RPC) Masaka East.

“Thanks to quick intelligence and swift coordination, our officers intercepted the suspects at Kizigo Village. A confrontation ensued, during which one of the suspects, identified as Ssenyuumu Lawrence, was put out of action,” SP Kasirye said in a statement.

Four of the robbers managed to escape and are still at large. Police recovered two rifles, a motorcycle believed to have been used in the robbery, and other critical exhibits from the scene.

“The operation demonstrated excellent teamwork between the regional CID, CI teams, and local police units. We thank the community for their cooperation and continued vigilance,” SP Kasirye added.

He emphasised that the hunt for the remaining suspects is ongoing and that further details, including names, will be released once the operation is concluded. The body of the deceased suspect was transported to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.

SP Kasirye also issued a strong warning to individuals involved in criminal activities, urging them to abandon crime and instead engage in lawful and productive endeavours.

“We strongly condemn such criminal acts. We encourage all citizens to participate in lawful economic activities and report suspicious behaviour to authorities. Crime does not pay,” he said.

Investigations continue as police intensify efforts to bring the remaining suspects to justice and recover the stolen money. The recovered firearms have been sent for forensic analysis as part of the ongoing probe.
