Katwe Police Arrest 35 Suspects in Major Crackdown on Motorcycle Theft Gangs

Police in Katwe, Kampala, have arrested 35 suspects in an intelligence-led operation aimed at dismantling criminal gangs responsible for a recent surge in motorcycle thefts and violent robberies targeting boda boda riders. The operation, conducted on the afternoon of 12th August 2025, focused on Wansanso Zone, Kibuye II Parish, Makindye Division, following public outcry over increasing insecurity in the area.

The crackdown targeted several garages suspected of being hubs for stolen motorcycles and spare parts. During the operation, officers recovered nine Bajaj Boxer motorcycles, including vehicles with registration numbers UFL 083U, UFW 693H, UET 495A, UFU 306W, UDS 592K, UFA 841M, UEL 401N, UFC 050L, and one motorcycle without a number plate. Numerous motorcycle parts were also impounded.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, confirmed that the suspects would be charged as investigations continue. “The arrests and recoveries are part of our ongoing efforts to ensure criminals who target our boda boda operators face justice,” he said.

Police also pledged to strengthen collaboration with local leaders and community vigilante groups to curb the rising crime wave and restore safety for motorcycle riders in Katwe.

Residents have welcomed the operation, expressing hope that it will deter further criminal activity and provide a safer environment for daily commuters. Authorities have urged the public to report suspicious activities and continue cooperating with law enforcement to maintain security.

The Katwe operation is part of a broader initiative by the Kampala Metropolitan Police to tackle organized crime and protect vulnerable members of the public from violent criminal activities.
