Government to send food aid to Karamoja
The government has decided send emergency food aid to Karamoja region in response to the widespread food shortage that is said to be killing people.
The decision to send food aid was reached at an Inter-ministerial meeting chaired by Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, Members of Parliament from Karamoja region.
The meeting observed the deteriorating food situation in the region as a result of prolonged drought which has destroyed crops and affected livestock.
The meeting agreed to treat the livestock in Karamoja, Teso and Lango against foot and mouth disease and ticks, and to negotiate for peaceful cross border grazing of Karamoja cattle in Teso and Lango regions because of lack of pasture and water in Karamoja.
The meeting also agreed to invest in more reliable and sustainable water harvesting technologies to facilitate irrigation and water supply for human and livestock use in the region.
