Uganda Offers Free Tickets as Sudan and Senegal Face Off in CHAN 2024 Bronze Medal Clash at Namboole

The 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) is nearing its conclusion, and on Friday, 29 August, all eyes will be on Namboole Stadium in Kampala as Sudan and Senegal battle for the bronze medal. The third-place playoff is part of the historic PAMOJA co-hosting of the tournament by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, marking the first time three nations have jointly staged the continental championship.

While the final in Nairobi on Saturday will crown the overall champion, Friday’s fixture offers Sudan and Senegal a chance to salvage pride and finish their campaigns on the podium. Sudan, competing in the third-place playoff for a record third time, will draw confidence from having won both of their previous bronze medal encounters—1-0 against Algeria in 2011 and on penalties against Libya in 2018. However, they enter this match winless in their last three outings, including a heartbreaking 116th-minute semi-final defeat to Madagascar.

Senegal, the defending champions, find themselves in unusual territory as the first reigning champions to contest a bronze medal game. Their semi-final against Morocco ended 1-1 after extra time, before the Lions of Teranga were edged out on penalties. Despite the setback, Senegal are undefeated in their last nine CHAN matches in open play and remain formidable opponents. With forward Joseph Layousse leading their scoring and Libasse Guèye supplying crucial assists, they will be eager to bounce back strongly.

In a major gesture to Ugandan football lovers, the Local Organising Committee (LOC), chaired by First Lady Janet Museveni, has purchased all 28,000 tickets for the bronze medal game from CAF and is distributing them free of charge. Tickets will be available exclusively via the CAF online portal, where fans can redeem them using the promo code “CHAN3RD.” Each fan can obtain up to three tickets, which will be branded NOT FOR SALE, but retain all CAF’s official security features.

“This is our way of saying thank you to all football fans who have made our homeland proud during this historic experience of hosting CHAN 2024 for the very first time,” said Dr. Dennis K. Mugimba, Chairperson of the Communications and Signage Sub-Committee.
