GNL Zamba Reveals Why ‘Wololo’ Music Video Was Never Released
Ugandan hip-hop icon Ernest Nsimbi, alias GNL Zamba, has opened up about the emotional backstory behind his track Wololo, a collaboration with songbird Juliana Kanyomozi, and why it never got a music video.
Speaking in a recent interview, the Dear Hip Hop rapper explained that while the song was warmly received by fans, personal circumstances at the time prevented him from pushing it further visually.
“To be honest, the real reason why I didn’t do the video was because I was going through some things in life,” GNL shared.
Originally, the track was intended to feature Joanita Kawalya, a Ugandan music legend and member of Afrigo Band. However, timing became a challenge.
“I was supposed to do it with Joanita Kawalya, but when she told me, ‘I am not going to be around, I’m going to South Africa and I’ll take some time away,’ I was impatient because my album had to be released,” he revealed.
In a moment of urgency, GNL reached out to Juliana Kanyomozi, a longtime friend and admired vocalist, to record the song instead.
“I called one of my good friends that I admire, Juliana and I was like, let’s do this. And she did an amazing job.”
But when Joanita returned and learned about the change, she wasn’t pleased.
“She wasn’t happy about how I conducted it, and I was like you know what, this is my parent. She was just telling me, ‘I am ready for the song,’ and I had to explain that it had already been recorded. I felt kind of guilty and I was like maybe I shouldn’t do a video for it,” GNL explained.
However, he hinted at reaching out to Juliana to discuss the possibility of shooting the video in the near future.
