Uganda’s efforts to promote coffee value addition and industrial processing received attention after the Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, visited Inspire Africa Coffee Park in Ntungamo District.
The minister, who was on a strategic Western Regional Science, Technology and Innovation assessment and industrial oversight mission, began his engagement at the coffee park by planting a coffee tree before inspecting the facility’s integrated production systems.
The visit included an assessment of the park’s water systems, organic fertilizer production facility, coffee processing units, and manufacturing lines producing a range of coffee-based products for domestic, regional, and international markets.
During the tour, Eng. Jonard inspected production facilities involved in coffee roasting and packaging, instant coffee production, drip coffee, coffee capsules, cold brew canned coffee, and coffee-based cosmetics.
The inspection was guided by Inspire Africa Coffee Park Chief Executive Officer Mr. Tugume Nelson, who highlighted the importance of collaboration between government and the private sector in advancing Uganda’s coffee value chain.
Turning Coffee Into High-Value Products
The visit highlighted how science, technology, and industrial processing can support Uganda’s efforts to move beyond exporting raw coffee beans and develop higher-value coffee products.
Uganda is one of Africa’s major coffee producers, and policymakers have increasingly emphasized the importance of adding value through processing, branding, and manufacturing.
Through investments in processing and innovation, facilities such as Inspire Africa Coffee Park demonstrate how coffee can be transformed into a wider range of products, including roasted and packaged coffee, ready-to-drink beverages, and coffee-based cosmetics.
Eng. Jonard said Uganda’s greatest opportunity lies not only in producing coffee but also in developing globally competitive brands and finished products.
“Coffee remains one of Uganda’s leading export commodities, but our greatest opportunity lies not in exporting raw beans, but in exporting innovation, brands and high-value finished products,” he said.
Science and Technology Supporting Industrial Growth
The minister emphasized that sustainable economic transformation requires investment in science, technology, infrastructure, and skilled expertise.
He noted that value addition serves as a link between agricultural production and industrial development by enabling the creation of jobs, expansion of exports, strengthening of farmer incomes, and growth of a knowledge-driven economy.
The Inspire Africa Coffee Park model demonstrates how agricultural production can be connected with manufacturing, research, engineering, and innovation to create more opportunities within the coffee sector.
Public-Private Partnership Supporting Coffee Transformation
Mr. Tugume Nelson said the visit reflected the importance of strategic partnerships between government and private sector players in advancing value addition and industrialization.
He said collaboration, investment, and innovation can help turn ambitious ideas into economic opportunities for Uganda.
According to Nelson, continued development of coffee processing and value addition can support job creation, increase export opportunities, and help farmers benefit more from the value created from their produce.
Uganda’s Future in Coffee Value Addition
Uganda’s coffee sector continues to explore opportunities to increase the value generated from one of the country’s key export commodities through processing, branding, and innovation.
The activities at Inspire Africa Coffee Park highlight how science, technology, and industrial processing can contribute to the development of high-value coffee products for regional and global markets.
The visit by Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki underscores the growing focus on using innovation and industrial capacity to strengthen Uganda’s coffee value chain.
