Kasese Municipality is preparing to launch a major infrastructure upgrade as part of Phase II of the Uganda Cities and Municipal Infrastructure Development (UCMID) program. The new initiative will focus on constructing nine vital roads and significant drainage systems, including the Kamulikwizi drainage channel.

From 2019 to 2024, Kasese benefited from UGX 54 billion under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) program. This funding was used to build and upgrade 10 roads covering a total of seven kilometers, procure a garbage collection truck, and fence the municipal council offices.

Due to the municipality’s effective use of these funds, the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development commended Kasese for its performance. “The fifteen new municipalities will benefit from the UCMID program,” said Judith Nabakoba, the Minister of Lands, noting that UCMID is a continuation of the now-completed USMID initiative.

Mayor Chance Kahindo attributed the municipality’s new funding to the ministry’s trust in Kasese’s proper management of previous USMID resources. He emphasized that the funds will enhance infrastructure and stimulate economic activity in the area.

Kambale Ferigo, the MP for Kasese Municipality, noted that part of the project will include the revitalization of Rwenzori Square. This redevelopment is intended to turn the square into a recreational hub and elevate Kasese’s status as a leading destination for tourism and commerce.

Meanwhile, Physical Planner Wilfred Baluku called on residents who may be affected by the planned developments to support the municipal authorities. He stressed that their cooperation is vital for the successful implementation of the project and the broader development of the town.
