Several Injured After Sauna Explosion at Buziga Country Resort in Kampala
Several people sustained severe injuries on Sunday evening following an explosion at a sauna in Buziga Country Resort, located in Kampala’s Makindye Division. The incident occurred at approximately 10:00 pm on August 24, 2025.
Eyewitnesses said up to eight people were injured, including a woman who suffered severe burns and was rushed to Kiruddu Hospital by rescuers. Several properties in the vicinity were also damaged by the blast. A video circulating on social media captured frantic scenes of victims being evacuated from the scene.
Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the incident, noting that a detailed report would be released on Monday.
“Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene to assist the victims and secure the area,” Owoyesigyire said.
Preliminary investigations by Kampala Metropolitan Police indicate that the explosion was caused by excessive heating of the sauna’s steam bath boiler. Authorities suspect that a faulty control valve may have contributed to the release of gas from the sealed metallic container, triggering a mechanical explosion. The blast damaged surrounding houses, prompting police to cordon off the area.
This is not the first time a sauna explosion has occurred in Kampala. In September 2019, five people were injured following an explosion at Marco Gym and Spa in Kyaliwajjala, Wakiso District. Similar incidents have been reported in Ntinda, where a gas cylinder explosion at a health club left several people with serious injuries.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident to determine the exact cause and are urging facility operators to adhere strictly to safety regulations to prevent future accidents.
