Minister for Kampala capital city, Minsa Kabanda issued a strong warning to contractors involved in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area road program while at the launch of the 7.8 kilometer Ntenjeru-Bule road in Mpata. She cautioned them against mismanaging construction funds, stressing that any misuse would not only hamper national development but also place an unfair burden on taxpayers.

“These funds are not free; we must pay them back,” Kabanda stated. “That means the entire nation has a responsibility over this money. I therefore urge you to complete this road within the 18-month period given. Furthermore, do not deliver substandard work, we want a road that will last over 25 years. Do not allow yourselves to be used by government officials or politicians to misuse the funds allocated for this road.”

The minister noted that the financing was sourced from international lenders, making timely repayment crucial. She emphasized that financial mismanagement and poor workmanship could lead to significant losses for the government, stall infrastructure progress, and diminish public trust in development initiatives.

Mukono South Member of Parliament, Fred Kayondo, welcomed the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in the region. He said the new road would facilitate easier transportation of goods including imports from ports thereby enhancing trade across the region. He also praised the residents who voluntarily gave up portions of their land to make way for the construction of a broader, more durable road.

Mukono Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Moses Muyambi, assured citizens that security agencies are actively overseeing the project to safeguard public resources. “We will deal with anyone caught stealing materials like fuel and construction equipment,” he warned.

In a related appeal, Mukono District Chairperson Rev. Peter Bakaluba urged all contractors and their staff to uphold discipline and show respect for local customs and residents during the construction process. He warned against criminal or unethical behavior such as theft, abuse, or impregnating minors, stressing that such actions could alienate communities and jeopardize government projects.

Built by China Railway No.5 Engineering Group, the Ntenjeru–Bule Road is projected to be completed within 18 months. Once finished, it is expected to play a vital role in enhancing connectivity and boosting economic activity throughout Mukono District and surrounding areas.
