Uganda today celebrated International Women’s Day 2026 with a spectacular all-women military parade at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, showcasing the growing role of women in the country’s security, leadership, and entrepreneurship sectors. The parade featured members from Uganda’s defense forces, police, and prison services, highlighting discipline, professionalism, and the expanding opportunities for women in traditionally male-dominated fields.
The national celebrations were led by Vice President Jessica Alupo, standing in for President Yoweri Museveni, who was attending the 25th Ordinary East African Community Summit in Arusha, Tanzania. Vice President Alupo commended the dedication and achievements of women across Uganda and emphasized the government’s commitment to scaling up access to justice for women and girls nationwide.
This year’s theme, “Scaling Up Investments to Accelerate Access to Justice for Women and Girls Across Uganda,” underscored the country’s focus on equality, fairness, and empowerment. During the event, Vice President Alupo also visited exhibition stalls by women entrepreneurs, promoting innovation, economic empowerment, and sustainable business growth.
Through a statement delivered at the ceremony, President Museveni stressed the importance of education, skills development, and economic empowerment of girls and women as key drivers of national progress. He highlighted government initiatives that have expanded free primary and secondary education, implemented affirmative action in universities, and increased opportunities for women in leadership and public service.
The celebrations inspire young girls to pursue careers in leadership, security, and entrepreneurship. Military officials noted that women now play critical roles in Uganda’s defense and security forces, with opportunities for advancement and leadership, demonstrating the success of ongoing reforms for gender equality.
Today’s International Women’s Day in Uganda not only celebrated women’s achievements but also reinforced government efforts to protect women and girls, eliminate harmful practices, and create opportunities for education, justice, and economic growth. The event drew officials, women’s organizations, and members of the public, reflecting Uganda’s continued commitment to women’s empowerment, girls’ education, and gender equality.
