Police in Kagadi District are responding to a tragic marine accident that has left dozens of passengers missing after a canoe capsized on River Nguse.
According to a statement released by Uganda Police Force, the incident occurred on the evening of April 28, 2026, at approximately 8:30 PM in Kyaleni Village, Pachwa Town Council. The canoe is believed to have been carrying between 35 and 40 passengers at the time of the दुर्घटना.
Authorities say one survivor, identified as 27-year-old Byaruhanga Tumuhaise, a resident of Kyaleni, has so far been rescued. However, the exact number of missing persons remains unclear due to the absence of a passenger manifest.
Marine Police teams have since launched an intensive search and rescue operation on River Nguse, while investigators begin probing the circumstances surrounding the حادث. Preliminary assessments suggest that overloading, traveling at night, and the condition of the canoe may have contributed to the capsizing.
Police have urged relatives of individuals who may have been aboard the ill-fated vessel to report to Kagadi Central Police Station to assist in identification and information gathering.
Speaking on behalf of the Albertine Region Police, spokesperson SP Hakiiza Julius confirmed that more updates will be provided as rescue efforts continue and investigations progress.
This incident adds to growing concerns about water transport safety in rural Uganda, particularly regarding vessel capacity compliance and nighttime travel risks.
