Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting regional peace, security and cooperation as preparations advance for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) High-Level Summit.

The preparations were hosted in Munyonyo, where the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, opened discussions aimed at strengthening strategies for the successful implementation and sustainability of AUSSOM.

In his remarks, Gen. Kainerugaba welcomed representatives from participating countries, partners and members of the organising committee, appreciating their efforts in preparing for the summit.

He said the discussions come at an important time as AUSSOM continues supporting Somalia’s security and stabilisation efforts. He emphasised the need for African countries and international partners to work together in addressing operational and logistical challenges affecting the mission.

The CDF also highlighted the challenges expected from the planned conclusion of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) mandate, noting the need to explore sustainable support mechanisms to maintain continuity of AUSSOM operations.

Gen. Kainerugaba stressed the importance of strategic partnerships, shared responsibility and coordinated efforts to preserve the progress made in Somalia’s pursuit of lasting peace and stability.

Uganda, which has been a long-standing contributor to regional peace support operations, continues to advocate for stronger cooperation and collective approaches to addressing security challenges across Africa.

The AUSSOM High-Level Summit is expected to bring together key stakeholders to discuss the future of the mission and reinforce commitments towards supporting peace, security and stability in Somalia.
