Museveni Urges Unity, Fiscal Prudence, and Modern Farming at Heroes’ Day Celebrations

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni today led the nation in commemorating Heroes’ Day in Lyantonde District, delivering a wide-ranging address that touched upon crucial aspects of governance, national unity, economic development, and security.1 The President’s speech underscored themes of family cohesion, efficient resource allocation, targeted development, and the importance of modern agricultural practices.

Opening his address, President Museveni emphasised the critical role of family unity, particularly in managing inheritance. “We should learn from other countries where inheritance is divided by shares, maintaining unity and fairness within families,” he urged, highlighting the need for structured approaches to prevent property-related disputes that often fracture families.

Turning his attention to the healthcare sector, the President revealed plans to consolidate medical services for liberation fighters.2 “I have told my people to put everything in Entebbe Grade B Hospital so that my fellow fighters are treated there. The money we are spending at Nakasero is a lot,” he stated, signalling a move towards more cost-effective and centralised healthcare provisions for this group.

Regarding the development of the Luweero Triangle, a region historically significant to Uganda’s liberation struggle, President Museveni pledged a meticulous review of the Ministry of the Luweero Triangle’s budget. “We are going to study the budget of the Ministry of Luweero Triangle and see what we can add on, but it should be focused and not touch too many things,” he affirmed, stressing the importance of targeted investments that deliver tangible benefits to the local populace.

In a direct message to the nation’s cattle farmers, the President advocated for a shift towards more sustainable and efficient agricultural practices. “Learn how to grow pastures and not depend only on what God provides,” he advised, encouraging farmers to embrace modern techniques for improved productivity and resilience.

President Museveni also took the opportunity to commend the Uganda Police Force’s canine unit for their instrumental role in apprehending perpetrators of violence in Masaka. This acknowledgement, he noted, served as a clear demonstration of the government’s unwavering dedication to upholding security and ensuring justice across the nation.

Addressing the long-standing issue of land rights, the President reiterated a collective, government-led approach to resolution. “Colonialists created this problem; it is not something that citizens should handle but rather by the government,” he asserted, underscoring the state’s responsibility in rectifying historical injustices concerning land ownership.

Concluding his remarks, President Museveni paid a profound tribute to the freedom fighters who spearheaded the resistance movement and expressed deep gratitude to the local population of Lyantonde for their crucial support during the struggle. Firstly, I want to salute the fighters who fought for the resistance movement. I also want to salute the people of this area who supported us during the struggle,” he said, encapsulating his speech with a powerful call for continued national unity, prudent resource management, and unwavering accountability.
