Dr Kazibwe technically knocked out of AU race
Dr. Specioza Wandira Kazibwes chances of securing the powerful position of chairperson of the African Union Commission have gone up in the win after ECOWAS representative abstained from voting on grounds that none of the candidates was qualified for the prestigious position. ECOWAS’s decision forced the postponement of the elections because no one would garner the required 2/3rds majority.
The race was between three contestants; Uganda’s Dr. Specioza Wandira Kazibwe, Botswana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Pelonomi Venson- Moitoi and Agapito Mba Mokuy, Equatorial Guinea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
How the elections went;
First Round:
Uganda’s candidate Dr. Speciaoza Kazibwe got – 11 votes
Agapito – 12 votes
Botswana ‘s Dr. Pelonomi got – 16 votes
Abstained – 15
2nd Round
Dr. Specioza got – 10 votes, one vote less compared to the first round.
Dr. Pelonomi got – 16 while Agapito pulled out.
So specioza was eliminated in the 2nd round
Subsequently, elections were suspended as non of the remaining candidates got the required two thirds majority.
