The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) golf team is determined to bring home silverware from the 16th CISM World Military Golf Championship, currently underway at the Diamond Leisure Beach and Golf Resort on the Kenyan South Coast in Kwale County.

Uganda’s formidable team comprises Flavia Namakula, Bobi Drani, Evelyn Asiimwe, William Omaria, Lawrence Walakira, Aggrey Mutaka, and Steven Odong. “We are giving our best in the championship,” remarked Flavia Namakula, a seasoned golfer and key member of the Ugandan contingent.

The championship, held under the theme “Friendship through Sport,” has brought together military golfers from across the globe. Major General David Ketter Kipkemboi, the Chief of the Kenyan Delegation to CISM, extended a warm welcome to all visiting countries.

African nations participating in the prestigious tournament include hosts Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and South Africa. They are joined by European contenders such as the Netherlands, Germany, Greece, Italy, Estonia, France, Spain, and Latvia, alongside teams from Bangladesh, Canada, India, and Bahrain.

In the opening round of competition, Panagiotis Pantazopoulos from Greece emerged as the day one leader, carding an impressive 1-under 71. He was closely followed by VD Walt of South Africa, who finished with a 72. Tmael Tasset (France), Pauline Stein (France), and Varoon Parmar (India) all sit at 2-over 73 after the first day of play.

The Ugandan team is hoping for strong performances in the coming rounds to climb the leaderboard and secure medals for their country. The championship runs until June 29, 2025.
